Preventative Maintenance & Hygiene

Did you know that a healthy mouth is a very important part of a healthy body?

Oral pain, infections and missing teeth can seriously degrade your quality of life by interfering in the way you speak, eat and interact with others. Much like any other disease, oral disease requires effective professional treatment. Research has shown that oral disease can aggravate other health problems, so by keeping your mouth healthy you also help the rest of your body.

Keystone Dental believes that prevention is the most important aspect in providing comprehensive dental care.

Following a regular oral hygiene maintenance program, including in-office cleanings, can prevent many dental problems from appearing or becoming worse. These include cavities, bad breath (halitosis), inflamed or bleeding gums, tartar/calculus build-up, and bone loss.

Periodontal (gum) diseases are infections of the gum and bone that hold teeth in place. If untreated, they can become severe and may lead to tooth loss. Periodontal diseases are often painless and you may not be aware that there is a problem until your gums and the supporting bone are seriously impacted. However, periodontal diseases can often be caught and treated in the early stages through treatments known as scaling and root planing.

Professional Cleaning

Professional cleaning by one of our skilled dental hygienists can remove the mineralized plaque that can develop even with careful brushing and flossing, particularly in areas that are hard to reach. We recommend that a cleaning be done once every six months.

Our hygienists use a combination of the latest ultrasonic scaling technology, hand scaling techniques, and the application of sealants and fluoride to ensure you receive comprehensive oral hygiene care. In addition, our hygienists are trained in using lasers as an adjunct to scaling. We provide complimentary Oral-B toothbrushes and floss at every hygiene appointment and will review with you the proper usage techniques.

Guided Biofilm Therapy

We are proud to now be certified in Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), an effective and minimally invasive process that preserves oral health and increases patient safety and comfortability.

This method begins with the use of a three-colour Biofilm ID dye that guides clinicians during teeth-cleaning procedures. The dye identifies where biofilm is, allowing us to ensure it is all removed. GBT is truly minimally invasive and reduces the need for hand and sonic/ultrasonic instrumentation. Instead, it utilizes advanced tools that require warm water mist, air, and very fine, non-abrasive AIRFLOW® PLUS erythritol powder to clean teeth.

Not only does this method provide a much more effective treatment, but GBT also allows our patients to have a comfortable, and even relaxing, experience.
